Why Are Cells Small? - Science @KMIDS

This lesson is an AP Biology lesson which covers Unit 2.3 – Cell Size. The opening of the lesson is an interactive discussion and review of required math terms students should already know. Students then practice calculating surface area to volume ratios with the use of Peardeck to enhance interactivity. Next students go to the lab where they carry out two activities. The first is a measurement activity looking at the relationship of surface area and volume as an object grows in size. The second activity looks at how these measurements affect diffusion of materials into cells by modelling them out of agar. By the end of the lesson students will have the knowledge and evidence to answer the question, “Why are Cells Small?”.
